The String Orchestra
Misha Galaganov, Conductor

The String Orchestra (SO) was formed in 1995 for string students who have had some orchestral experience, and who have intermediate skills in bowing techniques and in reading music. This orchestra allows string players to continue to develop skills in ensemble performance, and to receive more individualized instruction than would be possible in a full orchestra setting. The goal for SO is to perform more complex and challenging repertory than students of this level have played previously, and to develop the technique and ensemble skills necessary for future success in larger orchestras.

To set up an audition time, complete and return your application, with the $20 fee if you are a first time applicant. We will contact you after we receive your form.

Orchestra auditions include:

  • Scales
  • Orchestral excerpts
  • Prepared solo
  • Sight reading (YO and JYO)
Each audition will last 5 to 10 minutes.

Excerpts and Scales: III and IV
Solo: Prepare a solo (or section of a solo) of three minutes or less. The purpose of the solo is to show the level of your technical development. Your performance should demonstrate understanding of the first three positions. Typical solos for violin are at the level of Suzuki Book 4 with lower strings in Book 3 or 4. Students are required to have started work on vibrato. Previous orchestra experience is strongly recommended for this orchestra.
